Job Description


Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite residential mortgage applications in compliance with the Credit Union’ s Loan Policy and secondary market guidelines (FHLMC). The underwriter will review mortgage files for completeness and compliance, be responsible for submitting loans for approval to management when necessary


*Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following job functions. Other job functions may be assigned from time to time. The job functions contained herein are intended to be supplemented by “ Strategic Planning Goals” which describe various individual tasks associated with such functions.
  • Reviews, interprets and analyzes loan applicants’ credit histories, income and assets, tax returns, financial statements, and other complex financial information to render a loan decision, and effectively present loans to management when necessary.
  • May work with a complete loan application, or personally interview an applicant and request specified information for loan application.
  • Analyzes applicant financial status, credit, and property evaluation to determine feasibility of granting loan and submits application recommendation to management for verification and recommendation.
  • Examines loan documentation to ensure compliance with various state and federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Evaluate credit reports, verify employment, and calculate debt ratios and any factors needed to evaluate credit worthiness.
  • May be required to do processing and other duties related to loan accounts as part of overall duties assigned by management.
  • Reviews titles for correctness and ensuring all title requirements are met.
  • Works closely and effectively with the Mortgage and Loan Servicing department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Handling of Confidential Information: To comply with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Financial Modernization Act of 1999, Credit Union Officials, regular or temporary basis, agree to protect non-public/private information collected about individuals, i.E. Names, addresses, phone numbers, bank and credit card account numbers, income, credit history, and social security numbers. Additionally, confidential information of any member gained from any source in the course of duty shall not be used for personal gain or ever be revealed to unauthorized persons except with the consent of the individual or organization involved or as otherwise permitted by law, except in the execution of his or her duties or until the information has been disclosed by the parties involved. Certain credit union policies and procedures support this Act and are very explicit about when, why, and to whom this type of information can be given. The duty to protect non-public/private information continues after the credit union officials have terminated their relationship with the credit union.

Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required; plus two to three years experience in mortgage underwriting in a full service financial institution, or any equivalent combination of formal training and/or experience which provides minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities, thereof.

SAFE Act-An individual must agree to disclose personal information as described in the Act; and permit the credit union to make the information available publicly through the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry.

 

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as credit bureau reports, debt to income ratio reports, policy and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with borrowers and other employees.

 

Mathematical Skills:
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations involved in job functions and practices.

Reasoning Ability:
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Current Driver’ s License
  • Employees in this position will be required to register with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry or have a NMLS identification.

  • Good basic knowledge of computers, copiers, printers and other office equipment.
  • Must have the ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Thorough knowledge of mortgage products, processes and regulations.
  • Thorough understanding of residential real estate appraisal report requirements.
  • Thorough understanding of title requirements.
  • Working knowledge of secondary market underwriting guidelines.

  • A positive and cooperative attitude and professional, courteous personality conducive to dealing with co-workers and members.
  • Excellent listening, clear verbal, and professional written communication skills.
  • Must be able to express written and oral information clearly, concisely and completely to all different levels of the organization with proper spelling, composition and grammar.

Technology Skills
  • Proficiency in learning new systems.
  • Must be familiar with using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must be familiar in using email, loan origination systems, and a working knowledge of automated systems used in loan underwriting.
